This Frog Has a Song to Be Sung…

In the continued theme of humor to brighten any day or night (and, yes, at the risk of appearing completely ridiculous and irrelevant) i bring to you “This Frog”, my all-time favorite childhood sesame street tune, via Kermit the number one frog. At the time, of course, I had no clue about the nod to Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” - a correlation which makes it all the more brilliant now. If this doesn’t give you a laugh, i don’t know what will….

THIS FROG

This frog has to go his own way
This frog doesn’t care what the other frogs say
This frog wants to be happy, and this frog has to try
This frog is gonna make it or know the reason why
I’m not gonna sit here like some dumb old bump on a log
That isn’t me!
I’m gonna be this frog!

The Great Secret: A Good Sense of Humor!

How to diffuse the worst possible scenario? With a good sense of humor of course!

Bad things happen,
This is inevitable.
We define our lives,
This is also true.
We get lost in the mire,
This too shall pass…

As Edward Lorenz, the father of modern chaos theory, famously said:

“The fluttering of a butterfly’s wing in Rio de Janeiro, amplified by atmospheric currents, could cause a tornado in Texas two weeks later.”

Turning up the corners of your mouth,
what will be your ripple effect?

In a nutshell, here’s the great secret to happiness as i see it:

Is Obama bringing (God) back in style?

“God bless the United States of America…” Thus ended President Obama’s inauguration speech on this beautiful, monumental, and historic day. It’s a new day, and you can feel the change in the air - the hope - the excitement - the joy. We’ve waited a long time for this kind of change to come, and now more than ever is the hour. I noticed something particular in the ceremonies today, though, something which hearkened back to a simpler, humbler time, when going to church on Sundays was the norm and unmarried men over the age of 30 were shunned.

Now I’ve always had my own interpretation of what “God” signifies, but I thought that was sort of a bad word amongst the intelligent and otherwise well-educated folks, at the least something you kind of kept to yourself, or reserved for your intimate friends and family. Throughout the ceremonies of the day, though, I kept noticing the references, prayers and benedictions to God. Is “He” suddenly cool, or am I missing something? Continue reading →

Does Happiness Really Matter?

You may find this strange coming from me, but I’ve come to the realization lately that happiness alone does not necessarily make that much of a difference in your life – I’d even venture to say that happiness is overrated!

I’ve been thinking over this question for a long time. How important is happiness really? It’s a big topic in the public sphere. So many people nowadays are really coming into this question of how to find happiness. At the same time, everyone knows that happiness comes and goes. It’s a never-ending cycle. So how to break the cycle? Continue reading →

The Triumph of Love

In honor and support of the victims and hostages of the terrorist siege of Mumbai, and all victims of extremist violence around the world and here at home…

Celebrated in India for thousands of years, the Dussehra burning ritual closes the ten days of Hindu Navaratri festivals. Navaratri is a time of worship of the ‘Divine Mother’ - somewhat related to the western concept of mother nature. Honoring the legendary victory of King Rama over the ten-headed demon king Ravana who had abducted his beloved wife Sita, Dussehra celebrates the epic ten-day battle between Rama’s army of gods and men - including Vishnu and monkey-god Hanuman - and Ravana’s army of evil spirits and demons. With his hard-won victory, Rama’s beloved Sita is restored to his side and the forces of Love and light reign on earth again.

Symbolic of the triumph of light over darkness…the triumph of Love. Shot in the holy town of Laxman Jhula, India - just outside Rishikesh - where the Ganges River emerges at the foothills of the Himalayas. Halleluiah!

What does it mean to truly be a master of yourself?

That’s the question I’ve asked myself over and over since I met the tantric yogi master, Swami Amrit, who asked me the same question four years ago on my last visit to India. I think this last week I may have come up with the answer…

I’m writing from an internet shop in Pondicherry, India, drenched in cold sweat. The heat is syrupy and thick in the air, stifling any progress with the energetic pull of quicksand. The power is out again, it drops out intermittently day and night and everyone waits…we’re running on backup power now - any minute without warning the battery charge is finished and all systems are down. This is the tenuous nature of life here - the relentlessly stifling flow of time that forces me to reconsider the worthiness of just about every dream and goal I’ve ever considered undertaking.

I’ve been in India for a month and a half now - it’s taken me this long to just get to the point where I can begin to process this whole experience in a way that can reasonably be put into words. Here I begin to make an attempt at the endeavor: Continue reading →

Here’s to the Gurus

Who bring us
From the darkness to the Light
From ignorance into Bliss
From misery and suffering
into Everlasting Love

I wouldn’t be here without you all…

(I know that these few images only scratch the surface of the countless divine manifestations of the One truth that have graced this planet and the other-worlds… feel free to add your own links, images and quotes in the comments section)

From the great master Papaji:

“Approaching the Self is like walking the razors edge: Two cannot go there,
you can’t even bring your mind or a thought.
The only One who can help you is Self.
Anything that touches this Flame becomes Flame.
Touch a Sage and you become a Sage,
knowing Self you see only Self and this Self is your Teacher.

Eventually you have to get rid of the name and form of both Master and yourself,
you have to reject the finger in order to see the moon.
Where there is name and form there is falsehood,
there is an impediment to Freedom because
nothing you see will give you Freedom.

Hold on only to Self when you are drowning,
reach for anything else and you will die.
The Satguru is Within, meditate only on That!
The true Teacher is Self, all else is pointing to Self.
Don’t cling to anything made from the five elements.
The Guru has no body, visible or invisible.
Do not depend on any body, which are just fingers pointing to the Truth!
Reject the form of the Guru and only the Supreme is left.”

- Sri H.W.L. Poonja - aka PAPAJI
